Taking the First Step

Starting something new is scary. You think to yourself "I can't do that", "I'm not ____enough", "this isn't for me", "I don't have the time", and on and on...making every excuse to not take that first step.

When it comes to making healthy choices, all the same voices arise, except now your choices directly impact your health and wellbeing.

Yes, in a perfect world, everyone would have access to the freshest most delicious foods for mere pennies. But, alas we don't. What we do have, though, is knowledge and knowledge is so powerful! Knowledge and resourcefulness are what brought fire, the first wheel, creating steel, telephones, and the internet! Knowledge and resourcefulness are what make us human (and coming together as a community of support...but that's for another day).

Now, I know you know HOW to eat healthy. It's more fruits and veggies, lean sources of protein, whole grains, healthy fats, and so on...but why don't you make healthy choices more often?

Usually it's lack of time, budget constraints, or access. Do any of these feel familiar? If so, then you're in the right place.

So, how does one eat healthy on a budget?

The first step is to get crystal clear on your goals:

1) What is your weekly budget for groceries?

2) What are your family's favorite meals?

3) What are your health goals (think long term like managing cholesterol, or preventing diabetes - try to focus beyond weight)

Next, it is time to make a grocery list. List out what you normally buy and see if it fits within your budget. Then, when you go to the store, spend an extra minute looking for healthier alternatives and compare prices.

For example, if you typically buy ground beef, take a look at what a pound of dry beans cost compared to the beef. If you're not ready to commit to fully plant-based, use the beans to stretch the meal for cheap. Swapping beans or other plant-based sources of protein for animal protein automatically increases fiber and antioxidant intake which is excellent for long-term heart health and diabetes prevention. Plus, you get the added benefit of helping the planet.

Regularly check in with your grocery budget and making healthy swaps where it makes sense both financially and health-wise.
